2023 Toyota Camry 2.5L Oil Change: Specs and Preparation
Verify the oil grade, refill reference, maintenance interval, and safe preparation for a 2023 non-hybrid Camry 2.5L. Includes Toyota's oil-level check.
Vehicle Scope
The U.S.-market 2023 Toyota Camry with the non-hybrid 2.5L A25A-FKS engine specifies SAE 0W-16 oil meeting ILSAC GF-6B. Toyota lists 4.8 U.S. quarts (4.5 liters) as the drain-and-refill reference quantity with a filter change. Confirm the final level with the dipstick; the reference capacity is not an instruction to add that amount to an engine that already contains oil. See Toyota’s 2023 owner’s manual, page 578.
This page covers oil specifications, preparation, and checking or topping up the oil level for that exact model and engine. It is not a complete drain-and-filter replacement procedure. Use the applicable Toyota repair instructions before lifting the car or removing the filter or drain plug.
Confirm the car before buying supplies
Check your model year, market, and engine against the owner’s manual and vehicle information. This page does not establish specifications or fitment for the Camry Hybrid, V6, other model years, RAV4, or Highlander. A shared displacement does not establish a shared service procedure.

These values come from the 2023 owner’s manual, page 578. If 0W-16 is unavailable, Toyota permits 0W-20 temporarily and says to return to 0W-16 at the next oil change. The maintenance guide, page 56, specifies the shorter replacement interval for substitute oil; do not treat 0W-20 as the normal recommendation.
What to verify before a full oil change
Have the correct oil, a filter and drain-plug sealing parts confirmed for your vehicle, a suitable drain pan, and a disposal plan ready. Confirm filter fitment through a Toyota parts source or the filter manufacturer’s application catalog using the exact vehicle details. This page does not recommend a filter part number or wrench size.
Before starting, obtain the applicable repair procedure covering:
- Underbody access and identification of the engine-oil drain and filter.
- The correct filter installation method and tightening specification.
- Drain-plug sealing-part replacement and tightening specification, including installation conditions.
- Approved lifting and support locations and equipment instructions if under-car access is required.
- Leak inspection and the maintenance-reminder reset for the actual display fitted to the car.
The owner’s manual shows floor-jack positions on page 459, but that illustration alone is not a complete stand-support procedure. Never get underneath a vehicle supported only by a jack (see the jack warning on page 545). If you cannot establish the correct procedure or support arrangement, have a qualified shop perform the oil change. Do not substitute a guessed torque or a “snug plus a quarter turn” rule.
Before checking or adding oil
- • Park on level ground, secure the vehicle, and switch the engine off before reaching into the engine compartment.
- • Keep hands, clothing, and tools away from fans and belts. Engine parts and oil can remain hot after driving; avoid contact and wear safety glasses.
- • Support the hood correctly. Keep rags and other flammable materials out of the engine compartment.
- • If the low engine oil pressure warning appears while driving, stop in a safe place and contact Toyota. A routine top-up is not a diagnosis of an oil-pressure warning.

Check the oil level without lifting the car
Follow Toyota’s oil-level procedure, pages 462–465:
- Park on level ground. With the engine warmed to operating temperature and then turned off, wait more than five minutes for oil to drain back.
- Open and safely support the hood. Pull out the engine-oil dipstick with a rag held under its end.
- Wipe the dipstick clean and reinsert it fully.
- Pull it out again and read the level against the dipstick markings. The manual illustrates low, normal, and excessive levels.
- Wipe it and reinsert it fully after checking.
If the level is near or below the low mark, first confirm the oil already in the engine and use the same type. Remove the oil filler cap, add oil slowly through a clean funnel while checking the dipstick, then tighten the filler cap. Do not pour in the full service-refill capacity as a top-up. Overfilling can damage the engine. If the level is excessive, you cannot get a clear reading, or oil loss recurs, have the condition corrected before treating the service as complete.
When are oil and filter changes due?
For this engine using the specified 0W-16 oil, Toyota’s 2023 Warranty & Maintenance Guide, pages 38 and 56, gives 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Other scheduled maintenance still occurs between those oil changes.
Toyota specifies 5,000 miles or six months for oil and filter replacement when the majority of driving is under the listed special operating conditions:
- Dirt roads or dusty roads.
- Towing, use of a car-top carrier, or heavy vehicle loading. This maintenance category does not establish that the vehicle is approved for towing.
- Repeated trips of less than five miles in temperatures below 32°F (0°C).
- Extensive idling or low-speed driving for a long distance, such as police, taxi, or door-to-door delivery use.
Occasional exposure alone does not trigger those additional services under the guide’s explanation on page 37. If substitute 0W-20 was used, page 56 also requires replacement at 5,000 miles or six months with the specified 0W-16. Check the guide for the maintenance due at your mileage and elapsed time.
Plan disposal and keep a record
Keep used oil in a leak-proof container and arrange an accepting collection location before draining it. Call ahead about oil, filters, container requirements, and fees; free acceptance is not universal. The EPA’s consumer used-oil guidance explains recycling. Toyota also warns against putting used oil or filters in household trash, sewers, or on the ground (owner’s manual, page 465).
Record the date, mileage, oil grade, filter identification, and work performed. If a shop does the service, keep its invoice and ask it to document the installed oil and filter.
